Spirit One eZine seeking writers
Submissions & Contributor Guidelines

Spirit One Webzine is a emagazine of pagan spirituality. Our readers are people who identify positively with the term "Pagan" Our readership includes pagans of a variety of religious faiths.

Spirit One is a free online magazine which is published on this website 8 times a year. Articles and stories are sent in by volunteers on all 'Pagan' subjects. Spirit One Webzine offers the following guidelines to help you in submitting your work to us.

1. Subject matter

At present we are particularly interested in publishing good, well-researched articles on the subjects listed below. This is not a definitive list - merely ideas and a guide to the sort of things Spirit One readers expect to read about. Or at least what they're going to get.

Animal folklore and mythology - articles on individual animals and birds such as: Wren, Toad, Horse, Owl, Badger, Stag, Otter, Bear and Fox.

Folklore and mythology of trees and plants – articles on mistletoe, the blackthorn, aconite, the cypress, the linden or lime tree, the elm

Sacred/Ancient landscapes and sites - articles on archaeology, folklore, sites (including stone circles, standing stones, holy wells, ancient and other interesting carvings etc):

Other Ancient landscapes and sites - articles on sites further afield, eg temples in Greece, megalithic sites in Galicia or ritual complexes in the Baltic states or central America.

Deities - in-depth articles on individual deities such as Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Hecate, Odin and Hathor or on themes such as "Celtic horse Goddesses", "deities of the sea", "Gods of storm and tempest" or "deities of statecraft".

Anything else you think may be of interest. See the Spirit One's Archives for examples of the sort of thing which has been published in the recent past. O

We are still looking for definitive and well-researched articles on folk customs and traditions, magickal practice, sacred landscapes and consciousness, as well as aspects of wiccan/occult history and culture, "Qabala, Crowley 'n' Chaos", and anything else an inquiring mind may wish to know.

We also accept fiction, poetry and art work. (looking for a nice pagan comic strip hint hint)

Also horror, sci-fi and fantasy stories to articles on ghostly investigations and mysteries..

If you have an idea for an article, or wish to tackle one of the subjects on the above "wish-list", please email or phone the editor to discuss its suitability, the appropriate approach, scope, length, deadline etc. Spirit One thrives on a stance of originality and iconoclasm, so there's not a lot we won't publish.

2. Written Submissions
a. All written submissions should be the original work of the author. We prefer receiving submissions via email sent to submissions@spiritonewebzine.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or on computer disk accompanied by a double-spaced paper manuscript. (Please don't just send a disk - sometimes compatibility problems prevent us from reading disks which are submitted to us, and without a manuscript, we won't be able to evaluate your submission!) We are Windows based and prefer ASCII compatible or Word files attached to your email or if email is not an option by CD" or Zip disks. Please do not send us your only copy of your manuscript; accidents can happen and material sent to us is occasionally lost or damaged.

b. Articles should be from 2,500 - 6000 words (give or take). Longer articles can probably be accommodated by prior arrangement, i.e. I need to ensure that there is room to print all of your work. Alternatively, very long articles could be split over more than one edition of the magazine. A regular series of articles on a theme to run through several editions is also welcome. Please include your bio and any website information.

c. We are aware that you have worked hard on your writing, it is personal and special to you, and contains your unique voice. Nonetheless, we often find it necessary to edit for length, clarity and grammar, sometimes at the last minute before publication. Therefore, we CANNOT guarantee that your article will appear precisely as you submitted it. If you do not want your material edited in any way, please do not submit your writing to us. (Also, please inform us of deliberate uses of non-traditional spelling so the tone of your work will not be accidentally altered.)

3. Graphic Art
a. All graphic art submissions should be the original work of the artist. We encourage the submission of artwork which is pagan.

b. We are always looking for new artists to share their creativity in our pages. If you have a portfolio of your work, feel free to send it; when sending a body of work, please inform us if any of the pieces have been previously published or are not available for publication. We keep files of artwork, by artist, and when an issue is in production we find the pieces of artwork on file that fit each article, and then inform the artist in question that we have decided to publish their work. For this reason, your artwork may be on file for months, or years, without being used - if this is a problem for you, please inform us so we can work out other arrangements with you.

4. Photography
a. All photographic submissions should be the original work of the photographer. If persons other than the photographer are shown, a signed release from said person(s) must be included in order for us to publish the photo. Our use of photography is similar to that of graphic art; please see guidelines above.

5. General Information
a. Please email your submission.

b. Your submission will be acknowledged when we receive your material; we cannot guarantee exact publishing dates but will attempt to keep you up-to-date on the status of your work. We prefer to accept material which has not been previously seen or published - please inform us of multiple submissions or previous publications.
